Happy Mind – A Gamified App for Emotional Well-being

Happy Mind is a gamified mobile app co-created with positive psychology expert Dr. Sherif Arafa. It helps users train attention toward positive cues and build everyday wellbeing habits through ultra-short, playful exercises grounded in research (e.g., attentional bias modification and mere-exposure).

A gamified mobile app developed for a positive psychology expert to help users focus on positivity and emotional well-being. The app employs psychological techniques, such as the mere exposure effect and bias modification, to promote personal growth through playful interaction.

Designed for Android and iOS, it features beautifully illustrated 2D art, smooth animations, and an intuitive interface. The client wanted not just a good-looking product, but one grounded in science, enhancing motivation, mood, and emotional resilience.

The Experience

Happy Mind turns evidence-based techniques into short, playful practices you can complete in a few minutes a day.

Built in close partnership with positive psychology expert Dr. Sherif Arafa, we shaped the product vision, designed the UX and 2D art system, developed native apps for iOS and Android, and handled store publishing.

Key elements of the experience include:

  • Game-defined structure: the whole app experience is organised around gamification principles, where progress, rewards, and playful interaction motivate regular use.
  • Gentle nudges that encourage consistency, helping users return daily without pressure.
  • Positive focus training that shifts attention toward positive cues.
  • Custom 2D visuals that use gentle, repeatable imagery to build familiarity and warmth.
  • Daily guided sessions offering 2–5 minute routines with reminders and progress tracking.
  • Friendly microcopy that encourages perspective-taking and keeps the tone light.
  • Calm, accessible UX with clear flows, large touch targets, and subtle, rewarding motion.

Why Positive Psychology Matters

Positive psychology focuses on enhancing what makes life worth living, not just reducing distress. While traditional approaches often aim to address problems, positive psychology strengthens our ability to notice, savour, and amplify what is good — skills that improve both resilience and life satisfaction.

As Dr. Sherif Arafa’s research highlights, our brains are wired with a negativity bias. It’s a tendency to focus on threats or problems. Without conscious practice, this bias can narrow our worldview and erode our well-being. Positive psychology provides scientifically tested tools to counteract this, such as attentional bias modification and gratitude practices, which train the mind to seek and respond to positive cues.

Dr. Arafa also emphasises the role of humour and perspective-taking as powerful wellbeing tools. Humour reduces stress, builds empathy, and fosters cognitive flexibility, helping people reframe challenges. This is especially relevant in cultures and situations where everyday pressures can be high.

By embedding these principles into playful, micro-dose exercises, Happy Mind makes it easy for users to strengthen positive habits daily. Over time, such repeated practice can help shift default thought patterns, supporting not only a better mood but also more adaptive, creative, and compassionate ways of engaging with life.

Client’s Feedback

The app has completely satisfied all project requirements. Diversido's team was extremely professional throughout the process, working quickly to address any issues as they arose and maintaining forward progress.

Before our cooperation began, I asked many friends, searched the local market and many platforms to find the proper vendor. When I saw their portfolio, I tried one of their products and admired its design and functionality. Diversido was the best choice for what I had in mind.

They designed, developed, tested, and published the app, and were ready for maintenance and to fix any emerging issues. They were deeply engaged and suggested some creative ideas that helped achieve goals in better ways.

The application helped my clients practise techniques that were previously only available in experimental psychology labs, now made accessible to the public. The app reviews and user feedback have been great.

Communication went smoothly, and their business analysis was highly professional. Their project management was well-organised, and they handled every unexpected issue effectively. Clearly, they are professionals who know what they’re doing.

They didn’t just implement the requirements, they were actively involved in planning, contributing creative ideas that improved the product. Each team member was highly skilled in their area of expertise, from the outstanding design to the tight coordination at every stage until publishing.

They really exceeded all my expectations. (Based on feedback of Sherif Arafa on Clutch.)

Since launch, it has received enthusiastic reviews from both users and mental health professionals, who highlight its simplicity, warmth, and ability to make science-based wellbeing tools accessible to anyone.

By being game-defined and powered by behavioural nudges, the app not only supports the formation of lasting wellbeing habits but also makes those habits enjoyable to sustain.
